Cookeville Metabolic Workshop Promotes Healthy Lifestyle

A Metabolic Health workshop Saturday will help residents understand the the risks of metabolic conditions and ways to prevent problems.

Registered Nurse and Certified Diabetes Educator Melissa Ptak said metabolic syndrome involves multiple conditions, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, lipid levels, elevated blood sugar and being overweight or obese. She said residents can lower the chance of developing type II diabetes, heart attack or stroke.

“These are conditions that we can try to control or reduce through lifestyle nutrition modifications,” Ptak said. “So just trying to inform people on what we can do on an individual basis to try and reduce these conditions of metabolic syndrome, which will then reduce the risks of developing the risks of developing the other complicated health conditions.”

Ptak said a well-balanced diet and active lifestyle can improve a person’s overall health.

Ptak said her goal is to reduce behaviors that lead to metabolic conditions in the local area and state-wide. Ptak said the state has seen a rise in those developing type II diabetes by about 14 percent compared to the national average.

Ptak said, as a new resident of the Upper Cumberland, she appreciates the opportunity to support her community and provide resources to the surrounding areas.

“I feel that most people we interact with, its about one in three people that we interact with, will likely have one of the metabolic conditions,” Ptak said. “Such as pre-diabetes or high blood pressure or elevated glucose or be overweight.”

The workshop will take place at Cookeville’s Cane Creek Recreation Center. There will be a $20 admission fee.
