State Awards Cookeville History Museum $23K For Improvements

The Friends of the Cookeville History Museum plan to use an estimated $23,000 in new grant money to make improvements to the museum’s building.

Museum Manager Beth Thompson said the funds are part of the state’s effort to help small museums across the state. Thompson said it’s time to make building improvements, as the museum moved into its current building back in 2007.

“Everything from facade enhancements, to painting, to maybe even a brand new sign out front that will be very eye-catching for tourists and locals alike,” Thompson said.

Thompson said grants are hard to come by that can be used to make building improvements. Thompson said she is glad to receive funds like these from the state.

“We are so fortunate to have our friends groups and our supportive city government that funds and maintains these buildings on a day-to-day basis,” Thompson said. “But to have this little bit extra come in that we can use for projects like specific projects like this is really just priceless.”

Thompson said it is important to support and visit their local history museum.

“Everyone should visit their local museum because it is not just our country’s history, our state’s history, our city’s history, it’s your history,” Thompson said. “It’s everyone’s personal story, so come and find your story.”

Thompson said the museum is currently getting estimates for the improvements. Thompson said the grant requires the project to be completed by June 30, 2026. Thompson said she wants to hit the ground running with the project.
