Clay Schools TISA Scores Below State Requirements

The Clay County Schools TISA Accountability report revealed state testing scores did not make expected progress toward academic goals this fiscal year.

The report showed grades three through eight under performed on the spring Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program, as results fell below state requirements. According to the report, there has been a decline in third grade English scores by over five percent since last year.

Thirty-three percent of Clay third graders scored proficient on the English Learning Assessment portion of the test. Supervisor of Instruction Misty Strong said the county has time to improve these results through adjusting goals and improving benchmarks.

“For us to reach 70 percent proficiency has to be the same because that is designated by the state so what we do each year is we assess how far we have grown toward that goal,” Strong said. “And then we recalculate the increments it would take to get us to 70 percent.”

According to the report, the math portion of the test showed progress, raising in proficiency rating by three percentage points.

“We’ve shown improvement. Its a four year, five year average that we have to meet the state suggested proficiency,” Bailey said. “This is the second year in this process, and we’ve shown improvement, so we’re grateful for that, but we’re looking to take actions to continue that improvement.”

Bailey said the board takes many actions to complete student goals and is financially committed to completing academic goals. Bailey said students are making progress and that is what counts.

Strong said they are providing the same resources for older students, who fall into the college and career readiness category.

In other business, the council re-elected Chair Benji Bailey and Vice President Nathan Sherrell. The council approved a cafeteria oven for Hermitage Springs School.
