Cookeville To Award Interstate Drive Sidewalk Bid Thursday

Cookeville City Council will vote Thursday to award an estimated $1.9 million bid for the city’s Interstate Drive Sidewalk Project.

The project will construct sidewalks on both sides of Interstate Drive from Willow Avenue to Jefferson Avenue and will also include a segment on Jefferson on the West side from Interstate Drive to Walnut Avenue. City Manager James Mills said the project will not only involve sidewalks, but all of the aprons for driveways will be replaced.

“That needs to be done before we resurface,” Mills said. “So public hang with us, you know, this will hopefully take 360 days, so another year before we can resurface Interstate Drive.”

Community Development Director Jon Ward said the project received competitive bids and that Rogers Group was the lowest bidder. Ward said T-DOT has concurred and recommended awarding the low bid.

Ward said the project will be mostly funded through a grant.

“This is funded with SDBG monies, so these are 80/20 dollars; they are discretionary dollars that the city can use for various projects,” Ward said. “This was, you know, this project has been going on, James, since when, 2016, something like that.”

Ward said the project will also improve pedestrian crossing on Interstate Drive.

The corridor has already received utility upgrades. Officials are also working through the dip in the street in front of Smart Bank. Sidewalks and resurfacing will come next.
