New Sparta Skate Park Construction Nearing Completion

Sparta Mayor Jerry Lowery said the construction of Sparta’s new skate park at South Carter Street Park is nearing completion.

The Skate Park closed when the Old Sparta Hardware Building began to fall apart. Officials wanted to find a better place. Lowery said the contractor poured the concrete pad last week and is now working on constructing a retaining wall.

“I’m hoping within the next three weeks we will be finished, have that skateboard park equipment back up, and allowing those who love to skateboard to be able to have a spot there,” Lowery said.

Lowery said a pavilion, on-site restrooms, and fencing still have to be built to complete the project. Lowery said the new skate park will be similar but bigger than the previous skate park.

“We are looking at maybe some more equipment, it will be a little bigger, a little more space up there for us to add more equipment if we want to,” Lowery said. “But once we get that in, then we will look at that. But right now, all the same stuff will be going back in, just in a better spot, a better location, and a safer location, we think.”

Lowery said the project has gone smoothly for the most part, but officials did run into some challenges.

“Up there digging, removing a tree, and we ran into a sewer line that was too close to the surface with the roots and trees in there, but we got all of that fixed now, and it’s going to be a nice place when we get it fenced,” Lowery said.

Lowery said he is excited to have the skate park finished so the city can turn full attention to the splash pad.
