Monterey Awarded Grant To Rehab Low-Income Homes

Some $540,000 will be used by Monterey officials to rehab low-income homes, something Mayor Alex Garcia calls a major need.

The grant is part of the Tennessee Housing Development Agency’s rehabilitation program. Garcia said the opportunity can change someone’s life in Monterey.

“The median income here is not very high, so you have a lot of people who were probably in need of this,” Garcia said. “And the conditions of some of the houses here in Monterey are very old, so if we can get an opportunity to get somebody put in a new home, I think we should do it.”

Garcia said the town will learn the parameters of the grant after attending a THDA meeting in November. Garcia said he is unsure how the process works for which homes are chosen.

“I’m halfway expecting we are gonna have to create like a committee and take applications and do that kind of stuff,” Garcia said.

Garcia said the grant does not require matching funds. Garcia said he is looking forward to rehabbing some homes.

“As soon as we have parameters and we know how this is all going to work, then we are going to hit the ground running,” Garcia said.
