York’s Green Eyeing Urgency, Experience For Deep Run

The York Dragonettes Girls Basketball Team has been a fixture in Murfreesboro, heading to multiple state championships under head coach Michael Green.

With multiple trips to Murfreesboro, including last season’s run to the state championship, York has established itself as a consistent program. Now as the season begins to tip off, Green said he is counting on his most experienced roster yet to take the next step. That includes his approach to preparation, which Green said has not changed.

“We don’t go to camps looking for wins,” Green said. “We’re just looking to get better and to play the best competition that’s in the gym and usually we play the best competition.”

Green said his philosophy allows for the Dragonettes to become battle tested heading into March. For Green however, the journey sometimes has not been easy.

“We’ve had some highs and lows,” Green said. “We try to always tell them any camp we go to, we want the best and highest level of competition.”

York enters this season with a senior core unlike any Green has had before. With four seniors anchoring the lineup, Green said two traits will determine how far the Dragonettes go.

“We need some urgency,” Green said. “These four seniors, it’s their last year and I’d like to see some more urgency out of them and hopefully they can show the younger ones when you get to this level, this is how you need to prepare and this is how you need to attack these games.”

The Dragonettes will pair their experience with a supporting cast of underclassmen that played minutes throughout their run to the state championship. Green said he hopes the veterans will set the tone early, pushing the team to raise its standards from the opening tip.
