White County Considers Disbanding Parks And Rec Committee

White County Commissioners will consider disbanding the Parks and Recreation sub-committee once the county hires a permanent director.

The sub-committee has handled parks and recreation duties over the past few years, since the county has not had a parks and rec director. Commissioner Roger Mason said with the county hiring a parks and rec director, he believes the committee is no longer needed.

“I question whether or not we continue to need that subcommittee, if it would be more efficient for that position to handle those duties and report back to steering committee A,” Mason said.

Mason suggested that Steering Committee A handle the sub-committee duties until a director is hired. The commissioners will revisit the proposal during next month’s steering committee meetings.

“The reason I say that is we are tying up a lot of time for a lot of folks that are not county commissioners, and I’m not sure how effective we have been able to be anyway,” Mason said.

Commissioners asked where things stand with hiring a parks and recreation director. County Executive Denny Wayne Robinson said it is still a work in progress.

“We met with the state last week and they are helping us put together a job description for that position, and HR is involved in that,” Robinson said. “So we are putting the job description together now.”

Robinson said he expects the director position to be posted soon.
