Local emergency agencies are partnering to host the first-ever Cumberland County Safety Day event this Saturday.
Cumberland County EMA Director Travis Cole said the event will consist of several demonstrations and hands-on activities for families to interact and learn about safety. Cole said though the event is supposed to be fun, it is also designed to let families know the importance of being prepared for emergencies.
“Being prepared is a personal responsibility,” Cole said. “It starts with the homeowners having their own emergency plans in place, and that way, the impacts are lessened if and when disaster does strike.”
Cole said attendees will also get the chance to check out fire trucks, police vehicles, and several other first responder vehicles. Cole said the county got the idea to host a safety event after seeing several other counties host similar successful events.
“It’s also an opportunity to see some of this new equipment in action,” Cole said. ” You know, it’s an opportunity for us as department heads and leads to showcase some of the specialized and new equipment we have been lucky enough to be provided by our funding agencies. And it’s just a really good time for everybody.”
Cole said one of the fun activities that will be going on is playing cornhole with vision impairment goggles to simulate how hard basic tasks are when intoxicated. Cole said another fun activity, but very informal, is a carfit assessment.
“So a ca rfit assessment is gonna be going over just the placement of the driver away from the airbags with a seatbelt on,” Cole said. “Also, child restraint seats and you know, proper use and installation of those to make sure that the kiddos are as protected as possible in a vehicle.”
Cole said the event is totally free for families to attend. Cole said meals will be provided. The Cumberland County Safety Day will run from 10am-2pm at the Cumberland County Complex.
