White County Boys Bowling Head Coach Roger Thorpe said he will focus on developing the right technique for the Spartans this season.
Thorpe enters his second season as head coach. Thorpe took over for Wesley Martin, who coached the Spartans for the previous ten seasons. Thorpe said one thing he learned during his time as a fan and player of bowling was how specific the sport became.
“Bowling is a game of timing,” Thorpe said. “When you develop a form, then your timing goes in it. If you take off too fast, the ball’s gonna be late. If you take off too fast, the ball’s gonna go early. So it’s all about timing and developing a form. Once you develop a form then you get your timing going it. It all coincides with each other.”
Thorpe said the first step for a bowler is the most crucial. Thorpe said how fast you run up and bowl will affect the bowling ball’s trajectory. Thorpe said another part of a form bowlers must consider is relating to arm fatigue.
“Your swing comes in, it’s all crucial to everything,” Thorpe said. “When you push off, you push off and your arm drops.”
Thorpe recently completed tryouts for both the boys and girls bowling teams. Thorpe said he tried to teach some basic bowling techniques during the tryouts.
“Nobody can bowl right off the bat,” Thorpe said. “We’re looking for coachable people and people who can advance in the game.”
Senior Gage Browner returns to the team after leading the team in strikes and average score last season.
