Cookeville Regional Medical Center is still investigating the ransomware attack it suffered several weeks ago.
CEO Buffy Key said CRMC hired a company to continue the investigation. Key said the process takes a lot of time to uncover all the facts.
“The fact that they haven’t told us anything yet is to me a positive sign,” Key said. “That doesn’t mean that we may still not get some information that we want to get, but yeah, I think this is just their process. I think it takes the data mining people several weeks to investigate and get all that stuff done.”
A month ago, a cybersecurity expert reported that some CRMC patient information was found on the dark web. Key said she is aware that many people may have concerns about the possibility of sensitive information being stolen.
“Identity theft is a scary thing, and we want to make sure that doesn’t happen,” Key said. “But we are trying to be proactive and making sure the first we hear anything that, that could be a possibility, we’re taking those steps to make sure people are protected.”
When the ransomware attack first happened, CRMC continued operations without internet access. Key said the internet and operating systems are back up and running.
