Cumberland Student Crowned Math National Champion

Cumberland County Student Crecia Clouse takes home the seventh-grade Mathematics Champion at the National Beta Convention in Orlando.

At the national competition, students from all over the country took a 30-minute, 50-question math test in which Clouse scored a 49 out of 50, which ended up being the top score. Clouse said being a national champion was surprising.

“It’s insane,” Clouse said. “I did not think I was going to win because I didn’t place in the top ten last year at all, and this year it just happened.”

Clouse also credited her fourth-grade teacher, Rachel Wyatt, for helping her find a love for math. Clouse said she hopes to use her excellent math skills to one day become a sports statistician.

“I love Sports and Math,” Clouse said. “And together it’s just better.”

Clouse competed last November at the Tennessee Beta Convention and placed third in Mathematics for seventh grade, which qualified her for the National competition.

The National Beta Convention includes competitions for students from fourth grade to twelfth grade.
