Putnam Residents Want More Sports Facilities, Trails

Putnam County residents want new trails, more water recreation updates, and more athletic facilities in the county’s Master Plan.

Those the results of a Putnam County Parks and Recreation department survey. Parks and Recreation Director Cody Maynard said public interest in these items will give the department a chance to apply for more grants.

“We have several trails throughout the county,” Maynard said. “But, you know, we would like to see the trail complete from Monterey all the way down to Buffalo Valley. It’s a large scale project and grant funding will be extremely important for that.”

In terms of water recreation updates, Maynard said improvements could be made to spaces like the Monterey Community Pool.

Maynard said the survey is meant to help out with the master plan. Maynard said the survey will help open the door for more grant funding, but he can not guarantee that everything that the public wants will come to fruition.

“On the county side, we’ll continue to update as we move forward and make the changes that we have and work on the current projects,” Maynard said. “But in this, as we apply for different grants on what the county and Parks and Recreation gets approved for through grant money is where we get the focus.”

Maynard said Parks and Recreation is continuously working with UCDD to find any extra grant funding.

“The more funding we receive, the more changes we can make and the easier it becomes,” Maynard said.

Maynard said the master plan should be finalized soon.
