Aldermen Make Meeting Changes To Speed Approvals

McMinnville Aldermen have approved a slight change to improve the order of business during aldermen meetings.

The change involves grouping all non-controversial agenda items for approval with a single vote, aiming to speed up meeting times. The resolution was presented after the board spent an estimated 15 minutes approving 11 separate resolutions one by one. City Administrator Nolan Ming said how the new format would work if an item required multiple readings.

“So if you have one item on this list that you all know and you want to talk more about, you just request that that be moved down to further discussion,” Ming said. “And then you vote, and everything else on that list is approved.”

Ming provided packets and agendas of what the new meeting layout would look like for the board. Mayor Ryle Chastain said the new meeting format is similar to the Cookeville City Council’s meeting format.

“I had communicated with Mayor Laurin Wheaton at the city of Cookeville, and that’s what they do,” Chastain said. “It just helps streamline the process. There would still be consideration of minutes and a recognition of visitors.”

Some of the aldermen echoed that they believe the new format is a great idea.
