Farley Settling In As New Cumberland Schools Director

Cumberland County Director of Schools Rebecca Farley said she is settling in to her new role.

Farley said she has worked in the Cumberland County School System for 26 years and that being familiar with the personnel has made it a smooth transition. Now that she is settled in, Farley said she is focusing on accomplishing some goals for the school system. Farley mentioned her logo that says ALL, which represents all students, all staff, and all together.

“Want to bring unity to our system and to the school and reach everybody every day,” Farley said. “And we also want to definitely work on increasing our proficiency levels. especially, our third-grade reading levels.”

A contention that the Cumberland County School Board has had with previous directors is communication. Farley said she believes she and the school board have had excellent communication since she took over.

“So every Monday morning, I send an email to all of the board members, and I send them numerous texts and emails when I have issues that arise,” Farley said. “And I think that the communication has increased and improved, and we seem to be working together and everything seems to be going pretty smooth.”

A new job can oftentimes come with its own set of challenges. Farley said one challenge she is facing early on surrounds the school district’s new cell phone policy.

“We have not had that many problems with it in the school, but we did have lots of pushback from social media when it first came out,” Farley said. “But the schools have done a really good job of enforcing it.”

Farley said she wants to see the absolute best for Cumberland County students, teachers, and staff. Farley said she will continue to work hard to ensure that they have the best that she can provide them under her leadership.
