Byrdstown Pursuing More Main Street Park Improvements

Byrdstown has applied for an estimated $100,000 tourism enhancement grant in hopes of making more improvements at Main Street Park.

Byrdstown Mayor Sam Gibson said the town is hoping to upgrade the stage at the park. Gibson said the park’s stage is important to the town, as it is used for various activities.

“It’s used considerably a lot,” Gibson said. “And we need to, you know, anything we can do to upgrade it and make it even better for the people, for the people performing, and also for the public, you know. That’s mainly what we are looking for on that.”

Gibson said the town would also like to expand the size of the stage and upgrade the park’s pavilion. Gibson said the stage and pavilion are not in bad condition, but upgrades would not hurt.

“The boards are getting a little older,” Gibson said. “They are still in good shape, but yet, it needs some work on it. While we are doing that, we just need, if we can get some grant money, to do that.”

Gibson said Dale Hollow Lake is the big draw to get people to Byrdstown. Gibson said he hopes more tourism improvements can get tourists to spend more time and money in Byrdstown.

“We are trying to provide more things,” Gibson said. “Whether it be kayaking, rock climbing, you know, there are a lot of different things that we are trying to do to bring people to Pickett County, other than just to be on the lake fishing or to be on the lake. You know, give them a little bit of a choice on things that they can do.”

Gibson said the grant’s deadline is at the end of August. Gibson said he expects to hear back about the grant in the next couple of months.
