Michael Sells will begin his tenure this season as Livingston Academy girls soccer head coach.
Sells takes over the position after coaching for eight seasons. He previously coached at the middle school before becoming an assistant coach for the high school team. Sells said he has seen growth in not only himself, but also the sport of soccer.
“If you jump into something and you go to the highest speed possible right off the bat, you’re very likely to struggle I feel,” Sells said. “So transitioning each year and doing more and more and seeing what the girls can handle has really helped me.”
Sells will begin his head coaching career at Livingston coaching some familiar faces. The senior class played under Sells during his time at the middle school. Sells said he understands no moment is too big for any of the girls.
“I kind of know what positions they like to play, which ones they excel at, which ones they don’t like to play that they’re really good at,” Sells said.
Sells primarily coached the goalies during his first couple of years coaching at Livingston Academy. Sells said transitioning from goalie coach to head coach became easy over the summer.
“They’re a good group of girls, all of them, freshmen through seniors,” Sells said. “The seniors, they’ve taken more of a leadership role this year, so I’ve really appreciated that.”
Sells said he alongside the assistant coaches will chat with the seniors once a week on how practices are going. Sells said he looks to incorporate that input to make sure the seniors enjoy their last year playing high school soccer.
