White County Warriors Girls Soccer Head Coach Madison Mason has begun working on a new approach for her team.
Mason enters her second season as Warriors head coach. Mason said she has liked what she has seen so far in practices. Mason said during those practices, she continues to teach the kids one key intangible before the season starts.
“I really just want to teach the kids mental toughness,” Mason said. “Here in Sparta, we’re not super known as a soccer town, it’s basketball and football and I think sometimes the girls in games, they’re like getting down on themselves sometimes.”
Mason said the mental toughness becomes tougher to maintain when the other team scores first. Mason said she could see the team change their demeanor when a team did score first during her first season coaching. Mason said Boys Head Coach Cameron Dronebarger helped her with setting goals for the team.
“As the girls have been coming to me in my second season, they’ve kind of got to know my expectations,” Mason said. “So it’s been able to roll over pretty well.”
Mason previously became the assistant coach for the White County Middle School girls soccer team. Mason said her luck remains as her transition to head coach begins.
“My goal, the same for most people, is to eventually get to high school [coaching,]” Mason said. “The opportunity just opened up, the previous coach was leaving and I guess a good word got put in that I was trying hard and I got promoted to high school.”
Mason enters next season with five upperclassmen on the team.
