Gainesboro Discusses What To Do With Old Block Wall

Gainesboro Aldermen discussed what could be done about the wall next to the Old Wiggins Surveying Building on Gore Avenue.

Contractor Will Enix said the block wall is in poor condition and is causing water to infiltrate the building. Aldermen said options have been considered previously. Alderman Tom Goetz said a survey would be needed.

“I’ve heard it goes along the city property, that’s the city’s lot next to it, but it juts out and comes back, and so some of that is not the city’s,” Goetz said. “I’ve heard that piece of it, too. So, that’s why the survey, cause we don’t really know exactly what we own and where your property would be, where ours is.”

Enix said that the owner of the building has considered acquiring a survey. Mayor Lloyd Williams said the owner would likely have to get the survey, as the town has had trouble obtaining surveys.

“We tried to get a survey over here at the gas station, we had a big hole over there, it was eight months,” Williams said. “So if you can get him to give us a survey, that would be great. I mean, we tried to get one.”

Goetz said the town will try to apply for a downtown improvement grant to address the wall. Street Department Representative Joe Lynch said he did have some concerns regarding the wall.

“We tear it down, what’s gonna be behind that?” Lynch said. “I’ll get somebody to look at it, and then somebody says, ‘hey, you know, I think we tear it down or we can’t.’ Which we tried that one time to get people to look at it, and it’s so hard to find anybody to look at it.”

Williams said the town has an interest in either repairing or destroying the wall.
