Monterey Sets Street Paving List; Patchwork, Approval Next

The Monterey Street Committee formed a list of streets that need to be repaved, trying to add some priorities to the work.

Street Committee Chairman Larry Bennett said each alderman provided a list of streets that need to be repaved in their respective ward. Cates Road, Louis Avenue, South Elm Street, and Speck Avenue are a few streets included on the list. Bennett said the committee agreed to do patchwork on streets that are in the worst condition.

“Places like that, I can’t really come to mind to the rest of them, but there are several places all over town that we have old patches that are sunk in,” Bennett said. “And that’s pretty much all over town, but we’ll have to go over those and bring those back up to par.”

Bennett said the street committee will now send the recommended list to the board of aldermen for approval at the August aldermen meeting. Bennett said the plan is to spend street funds wisely to repair as many streets as funding allows.

“Well, I think what we are gonna do, instead of hiring someone to do this kind of patchwork, I think our city employees that are working on the streets will be able to do that by themselves,” Bennett said. “That would save us a lot of money right there.”

Bennett said Speck Avenue and Louis Avenue are the two streets he believes are in the worst condition. However, Bennett said the committee has not decided which streets would be paved first.

“The way we thought that we would do that is just let our street manager, just go and when he sees a street that’s got bad potholes or needs a repair or whatever, just report that back and we’ll go from there,” Bennett said. “Just do a little as we go.”

Bennett said he encourages people to let the town know if there are streets that need attention. Bennett said if the list gets approved in August, he believes the town would begin right away on patchwork.
