Sparta Mayor Jerry Lowery said there has been no movement on negotiations with Waste Management regarding the city’s use of the White County Landfill.
Lowery said despite a couple of meetings, he does not know what Waste Management wants to charge the city per ton delivered to the landfill. Lowery said there was no written agreement made in the previous meetings.
“I requested that they come back to the meeting with a written proposal,” Lowery said. “‘We’re going to charge you, you know $20 a ton on garbage,’ or whatever the price is, and I can make a, I can look at the budget and make a decision based on real numbers.”
Lowery said they still have yet to reach those figures, but he plans to follow up over the next few weeks. Lowery said he can not make a decision until he has a proposal in hand.
“I just can’t do it sitting around a table, talking about, ‘It could be this, it could be that,'” Lowery said. “The reality is, I like to see the real numbers so the board of Alderman and myself can make real decisions.”
Waste Management purchased the White County Landfill last year. The city of Sparta’s use of the landfill was not included in the contract after the landfill was sold.
The negotiations have been at a stalemate since December, as Lowery awaits the costs of landfill use.
