The Cumberland County Fire Department is showing off recent renovations at the Tansi and Mayland Fire Stations at open houses this summer.
Fire Chief Trevor Kerley said this it the first remodel at Tansi Fire Station since it opened in 1986. He said the EMS and Tansi Security used to occupy the building with the fire department, but they have since moved out.
“We went in and remodeled it and put living quarters for the Tansi Volunteer Fire Department and we done just totally given an upgrade on it,” Kerley said. “That is one of the future stations we’re wanting to man, so we’re just doing an open house to see how good it looks now.”
Kerley said a new bay has been built to house a 2,000 gallon tanker fire truck at the Mayland Fire Station. Kerley said the used truck was purchased out of last year’s budget. Kerley said the upgrades were done because of growth in the Mayland community.
Kerley said the Tansi station has never even received simple upgrades like a new paint job. The Tansi Fire Station will open to the public on July 30 from 11 am to 1 pm.
The Mayland Open House will be August 5 from 2 to 4 pm. Kerley said the open houses will primarily be tours, but people are free to ask any questions they have about fire safety.
“They’ll just get to meet the crew, the men that work there,” Kerley said. “And also see the new equipment we’ve put in there the last few years.”
In addition to meeting the firefighters, Kerley said the public will be able to learn about their day-to-day when they’re not responding to calls.
“They’ll get to see what all that the guys do as far as the community service where they come and put smoke alarms and CO alarms in, check alarms,” Kerley said. “Also just do some basic fire safety education for them. We go out to a lot of the schools, day camps and stuff during the summer for the kids.”
