Mason Said Time To Find A New Convenience Center Site

White County Commissioner Roger Mason said it is time to pick up the pace on finding a new convenience center location.

The Landfill Convenience Center will soon be going away as part of the selling of the facility. Mason said the loss of this convenience center will make it more difficult for the customers it serves to dispose of their trash.

“There’s a big gap between Cassville and Doyle,” Mason said. “And so, there might be potential for a couple places down there close to locate a convenience center.”

Mason offered to investigate some options for a new convenience center location. Mason said he would present his findings to the solid waste committee when they reconvene next month.

“I think we’re need to start making plans at some point,” Mason said. “We’re going to have to have one somewhere. And with the landfill being in [Derrick Hutchings] and I’s district, I don’t mind looking into that.”

Meantime, the sale of the landfill to Waste Management is moving along. Solid Waste Committee Chair TK Austin said the state has finished their part of the process. Austin said the permit should become official at the end of July pending a public hearing, which has not been scheduled.

After the permit is awarded, around a year’s worth of work will be done at the landfill. The committee pointed out that some materials have already been brought to the site.

“They’re sure enough everything’s going that they’ve already started preliminary stuff,” Austin said.

The White County Landfill sale, totaling some $2 million, was finalized in June, 2024.
