Jackson County Mayor Jim Morgan said that the county is still pursuing a lease at Roaring River Park with the Corps of Engineers.
Morgan said the county has recently received an archeological study agreement from the Corps of Engineers. Morgan said he has sent the agreement to the county’s budget committee and the county attorney for review.
“These studies are expensive, so we don’t want to put an overloaded burden on the county without looking into it,” Morgan said. “And there’s things in this contract or agreement that we need to study and look into and get answers to clarify what we have to do and things like this.”
Former County Mayor Randy Heady was a big advocate in the county acquiring a lease at Roaring River Park. Morgan said he would like to see a lease get done, but the county is being cautious.
“I don’t wanna get too far ahead of myself,” Morgan said. “We’re still looking into it. Haven’t taken it off the table. A lot of interest in it in the county, so right now we are just taking it slow.”
Morgan said a campground is still in the plans. Morgan said the county is also looking at constructing a greenway on the property.
“We had a study done just recently that would put a greenway, a walkway, from downtown Gainesboro over to Roaring River Park,” Morgan said. “So we’re pursuing some different things, but we have not put anything concrete in stone as to what we may do with this. There’s been some other options that have been kind of presented, but there’s nothing that has been decided indefinitely that we are gonna do this or gonna do that.”
