To Best Handle Tax Money, Jackson Finance Team Certified

Jackson County Director of Schools Jason Hardy and members of the system’s finance team now Certified County Finance Officers (CCFO).

Hardy said Finance Director Freda Hammock pushed for the certification. Hardy said the team started taking certification classes over a year ago.

“We want them to have the utmost confidence in us,” Hardy said. “And that’s why we go out and we make sure we know the laws, we know what we can and can’t do, and we don’t wanna make any mistakes and the more educated we are the better we can, you know, spend the money for the resources our kids need in this county.”

Hardy said he is proud of his finance team as becoming a CCFO is a rigorous process.

“Each class you went it was a full day,” Hardy said. “And you know, you had a test for the first session, and then come back and have the second test, so two tests every session, but just a real good experience that was put on by the University of Tennessee. I would recommend it to anybody that’s in you know, in finances. It’s a free thing for any county official, so I would recommend any county official that wants to better themselves and learn more about county finance to go and sign up for this class.”

Hardy said he may have been one of the few directors of schools who attended the classes. Hardy said he did not know how big of a deal becoming a CCFO would be.

“The auditors that we have come to our building to audit our books, a lot of them are not CCFOs,” Hardy said. “Most mayors throughout the state are not CCFOs.”

Hardy said he believes having a full team of CCFOs really helped with putting together a good budget for the upcoming fiscal year. Those on the finance team who became certified are Madonna Browe, Barry Hammock, Connie Birdwell, and Mary Langford.
