An American Heart Certified instructor will get you ready for the summer ahead with a first aid and CPR class in Cookeville Friday.
Instructor Marie Mosley said the two classes will be taught back to back. Mosely said the first aid class contains lots of information on medical emergencies and how to spot them. Topics covered include stroke, heart attack, and diabetic emergencies.
“I tell people they become the first responder because when they call for 911 or for help, they recognize what’s going on, which can give healthcare providers a clearer understanding of what they’re responding to,” Mosley said.
Mosely said the first aid class will cover physical emergencies like broken bones or bleeding. Mosley said emergencies from the environment, such as snake bites, will also be covered.
Mosley said the class invites anyone, especially parents.
“We’re in the heat of summer,” Mosley said. “We’ve got camps and outside activities. If we have a fall, or heat stroke and things like that, we go in a lot of detail of recognizing early signs and what we can do to prevent things from getting worse.”
Mosley said the CPR class will teach people why CPR is done. Participants will also learn to spot the difference between heart attacks and cardiac arrest. Mosely said the class teaches how AEDs help during a cardiac arrest.
“A lot of times, people are afraid because they don’t know what’s going on,” Mosley said. “And they don’t want to do something wrong.”
The hour long CPR Class will begin at noon on Friday. The first aid class will begin at 1:30. Each class costs $50.
Participants who only want to attend one class are able to do so. Mosely said payment will be taken at the end of each session.
The classes will be held at 599 Vickers Place in the suite room.
