BCAT Testing Shot Clock in Girls, Boys Basketball Camps

The Basketball Coaches Association of Tennessee (BCAT) is testing out a shot clock during girls and boys basketball camps this June.

A shot clock gives teams a certain amount of time to score or shoot the basketball or else they will forfeit possession to the other team. White County Head Coach Michael Dodgen said he is an advocate of the proposed new rule.

“I really like that,” Dodgen said. “I think it rewards you especially in late game situations of playing with that and, you know, I think it’s a good situation that we really, really need to get in the game, especially the girls game of basketball in Tennessee.”

Shot clocks were set to 35 seconds. Dodgen said defensively teams can use the shot clock as a reward.

“I really like it because it gets these kids ready for the next level, the ones that want to go to the next level,” Dodgen said. “It gets them ready and want to do those things. I think it’s something that’s been long overdue and I really like it and really want it to be in our game.”

The shot clock has been proposed by coaches across the Upper Cumberland recently. The idea, which would allow for shot clock use in regular season and postseason games, has been tabled by the TSSAA board.

A decision is expected to be announced by the end of the summer.
