A change order for some $708,000 in cost overages for Cookeville’s 10th Street widening set to be considered by Cookeville City Council.
Phase two of the project between Fisk Road and Old Kentucky Road nearing completion. At Monday’s work session, Public Works Director Mary Beth Elrod said the biggest issue in the phase two work, a $335,000 increase for undercutting. Elrod said that is the removal of unsuitable soils.
“This is not our final adjusting change order,” Elrod said. “We do have some line items that are deductive line items that weren’t used, but it will not zero this out, so we will go a little bit over budget on this project because of the undercut.”
Elrod said with the change order, the city will no longer save money by the project being ahead of schedule. City Manager James Mills said the city is lucky that the project is not going up even more.
“We are lucky the undercutting wasn’t what it was,” Mills said. “That first section we did was almost all undercut, there’s a lot of bad soils in that section of town,” Mills said. “I don’t know though, it’s pretty close to where we thought it would be, so we are pretty happy with it.”
The original contract price for phase two of the project was some $7.6 million. The project is still projected to finish by October.
The Cookeville City Council will vote on the resolution to approve the change order this Thursday.
