Upperman Bees Girls Basketball Head Coach Dana McWilliams said her team does not typically practice much during the summer.
McWilliams said her team focuses on eight days of camp to get ready for the season. Among those days completed were the BCAT Girls Hoopfest in Lebanon. McWilliams said she tries to use that time as her main days to practice.
“There’s no advantage or disadvantage [to playing two consecutive days of camp,]” McWilliams said. “You get ten days and you have to use them before the dead period, so some people have days left, some people don’t, some people have got places that are closer, this is really close to us so it’s convenient for us and that’s why we come [to Lebanon] two days.”
Upperman completed practices in the spring to help get them ready for the summer. McWilliams said this time gives her team a chance to see how they fare against other teams in Tennessee.
“Camp’s really for us more about, you know, seeing how we fit and maybe what adjustments we can make when the season comes around,” McWilliams said.
McWilliams said she is a supporter of the proposed shot clock rule.
“We would love for it to be put in immediately,” McWilliams said. “It’s just a good thing for all of Tennessee that we can do that.”
The proposed new rule would see shot clocks become implemented in regular season and postseason play across the state of Tennessee. The shot clock could make its way into games as early as this upcoming season. The rule is currently tabled by the TSSAA board.
Upperman looks to return to state next season. They have made it to the tournament twice in the last five years.
