Multiple major companies, including Amazon, AT&T, Google, and Microsoft, experienced website disruptions on Thursday, leading to widespread reports of outages across the internet.
Tennessee Tech Associate Director of Cybersecurity Eric Brown said the widespread outages stemmed from a company called Cloudflare. Brown said Cloudflare is a web infrastructure and security company that provides enterprise-level security and service features to a lot of companies around the world.
“Apparently, Cloudflare had a service outage of their own, and with their products not having a good day, it caused a lot of websites all around the world to not have a good day,” Brown said.
Brown said the issue started around 1:30pm Central Time but has since been resolved. Brown said the outage highlights how interconnected and dependent digital services are on a handful of core infrastructure providers.
