Wheeler Pushed by Teammates, Helped in Tennis Game

Cookeville senior Isaac Wheeler said he credits his teammates for pushing him throughout his tennis career.

Wheeler joined the tennis team in his eighth grade year. Wheeler said he joined after knowing that the team needed one more boy. Wheeler said he felt his buggest jump occure between freshman and sophomore year.

“I think I’ve grown a lot,” Wheeler said. “My mental game my sophomore year when I began playing was awful, and I feel like I’m able to, that;’s the biggest thing I’ve grown on is the fact that I’m able to let go and just take it as it goes.”

Isaac Wheeler finished his senior year with a team record of 20-1. Cookeville’s one loss came in the state tournament against Science Hill. Wheeler said his teammates helped motivate him all season.

“They push you to work harder,” Wheeler said. “I give them credit because they make you want to beat them in the future.”

Wheeler said he believed at first everyone was better than him.

“It kind of gave me a drive to work harder, to get to that level, and it really just made me want to get better,” Wheeler said.

Isaac Wheeler graduated from Cookeville last Friday. He joins seniors Cade Smith and Payne Davis as having graduated the high school this year. Wheeler said he will be heading to the University of Tennessee to major in sports management.

“Isaac’s one of those kids that leaves an impact on your program,” Cookeville Tennis Head Coach Brian Rohr said. “Not a lot of kids like him come along, much less players like him.”
