Putnam Schools Offering New Family Summer Meal Service

The Putnam County School System is helping feed children in need while school is out for the summer.

Nutrition Program Supervisor Jennifer Mitchell said this is the first year seven days worth of breakfast and lunch will be provided, thanks to more available workers. Mitchell said boxes will include meals consisting of re-heatable entrees, fresh produce, and milk.

“We know that kids can’t learn if they’re hungry,” Mitchell said. “If they’re worried about food, learning isn’t the first thing on their mind, so they can’t focus. so it’s something we’re able to do and we’re excited about doing it.”

Mitchell said the USDA Seamless Summer program allows the school system to connect with and assist with summer meals. Mitchell said there is a huge need for this program.

“With everything costing more, food, labor, in our country as it is now, I think families are having a harder time providing for their families,” Mitchell said. “At least, what we can do is offer a variety of food. I think it’s a good opportunity and it’s good for our families.”

Mitchell said she more whole foods will be provided this summer.

“They’ll get lettuce, tomatoes, watermelon, fresh fruit,” Mitchell said. “That maybe they can hold over and eat later in the week instead of having to eat it that day or the next day.”

Mitchell said a parent or guardian must be present with their child to pick up a meal box.

Mitchell said children under 18 who are not enrolled in summer learning camps are eligible for a meal box. Mitchell said children in summer learning camps are fed while on campus. Those students are also provided meals for over the weekend.

Mitchell said it may take time to adjust to a seven day box format, meaning meal pickup times might be longer. Mitchell said she hopes families will be patient with the transition.
