Big Turnout For Tuesday’s Celina Mayor & Aldermen Race

The Clay County Elections Commission expecting a big turnout for Celina’s municipal election Tuesday with 11 candidates on the ballot.

Three candidates running for Celina Mayor, eight for three seats on the Board of Aldermen. Clay County Election Administrator Monica Davis said the candidate pool piquing the interest of citizens.

“We are expecting higher than normal compared to what early voting totals were,” Davis said. “Four years ago, we had 167, I believe it was that voted in person on election day, and we are expecting more than that. Hopefully, over 200 or 250.”

Davis said citizens will need to be registered voters and will need to bring some form of photo identification in order to vote. Davis said the ballot will be small, and the average time it will take to vote is five minutes.

“They will walk into the precinct, and they will present their photo ID to one of the poll workers, they will scan that photo ID, and if their name comes up on the poll pad, and it shows that they are eligible to vote,” Davis said. “They will print them out an application to vote. The voter will sign that, and it will be passed down to the machine operator, who will take them to the voting machine to vote.”

Davis said lines usually back up when the polls open and near the time when polls close. Davis said the election commission has enough poll workers for the election.

“We are fortunate in Clay County to have plenty of volunteers to work at the polls,” Davis said.

Polls will be open Tuesday from 9am-7pm. The lone voting precinct for the election will be located at the Celina Fire Department.
