Water Line Repairs Cause Maple Avenue Closure

The Cookeville Water Department closed a section of South Maple Avenue on Wednesday to repair a water line.

The closure ranged from East Stevens Street to Veterans Drive. Cookeville Water Department Operations Superintendent Jeremiah Williams said a resident notified the water department Tuesday afternoon about not having any water. Williams said the department discovered a broken water service line located in the middle of Maple Avenue.

“We got her back in water yesterday afternoon and had to make arrangements today to cut and cap out an old service line and make a new service line out of the road, and we for safety reasons, being cutting into both lanes, there was not enough room there to leave traffic open,” Williams said.

The department originally planned to have the lane closed until 1:30pm on Wednesday, but Williams said the repair is ahead of schedule and plans to reopen the South Maple Avenue before then. Williams said the burst was likely caused by time.

“These things happen quite often,” Williams said. “We’ve got thousands of feet of service lines and main lines out in the system, and that’s what we’ve got our crews for, is to make those repairs.”

Williams said the issue only impacted one resident, as the service line only served one resident.
