The Big Lick Fire Station received “minor damage” from the EF1 tornado that hit the southern portion of Cumberland County last week.
Cumberland County Fire Chief Trevor Kerley said a tree fell and damaged the roof on the left side of the station, and the station’s bay door was blown off due to strong winds. Kerley said the damaged section of the roof will be repaired soon.
“They’ll put the roof on it, whatever, when they put us on schedule,” Kerley said. “There is no leak, so it’s not doing any more damage to it, it’s just got the overhang bent and the gutter torn off of it. So yeah, it’s just a minor repair on it, and we were very fortunate on it.”
Kerley said the bay door is being replaced on Tuesday. Kerley said he is still unsure if insurance will cover the repairs.
“Um, we’ll see,” Kerley said. “We got a big deductible, so I will have to see what it meets.”
Kerley said three other trees fell on the station’s property but did not hit the station. Kerley said the Big Lick Fire Station did not have anyone in the station when the storm struck. Kerley said so far, the damage has not hindered the operations of the fire station.
“Now that night it was the truck that was in the station, couldn’t come out of the station, but that was no problem,” Kerley said. “That’s just a satellite station we have out there. We don’t have a lot of volunteers out there that work out there anyway.”
Kerley said cleaning up the damage has gone well. Kerley said they have collected the brush together and are waiting for it to get dry enough to burn all of the brush.
