Gainesboro’s Charles Holland Library will launch its summer reading program this week.
Library Director Melissa Dawes said there is a huge need for the program in Jackson County. . Dawes said this year’s program is called “Color our World,” which is themed around art.
“I think there is a correlation between reading and art,” Dawes said. “I think reading is an art. So we’re just encouraging children to enjoy books and see what’s out there.”
Dawes said participants can read anything as part of the program. Dawes said the Library will host art-related activities to go with the reading program.
“We have acrylic classes and some process art classes,” Dawes said. “We also have several reading story times for the toddlers with crafts to do.”
Dawes said this year, participants can search for Book Rocks.
“Students, and well, any participant of the summer reading program, they’ll be looking for rocks that are painted as books in some of the local businesses,” Dawes said. “And then they’ll bring us those rocks and we will give them a free book.”
Dawes said kids should keep reading over the summer to keep the habit and prepare for next school year.
The Charles Holland Library’s summer reading kickoff is Friday at 10am.
