Monterey requesting bids to replace the flat roof of the Water Treatment Plant.
Water Treatment Plant Supervisor Duane Jarrett said the roof is nearly 30 years old. The roof has been patched four times in the past ten years. Jarrett said water stains are becoming more prevalent inside.
“You’ve got to protect assets,” Jarrett said. “This plant would probably cost you about $15-million to build today. You can’t let water pour in here and ruin these computers and stuff. You know, some of these computer systems are $300,000, you just can’t let them get wet and ruin.”
Green said the bidding process will last about three weeks. Green hopeful Aldermen can approve bids in the next month.
Jarrett said when jobs reach this size he gives the bid request to the mayor, who in turn, hands it over to an engineering firm.
“You know the engineer can step in, he’s licensed, bonded and insured and he can make things happen legally that I can’t,” Jarrett said. “It’s a fairly expensive project so this project was handed off.”
Engineer Nathaniel Green said he expects the bids to come in somewhere between $70 and $130,000. Green said that is based on bids from two weeks ago of similar size and scope.
Jarrett said the money for the project will come from the water department’s fund.
“I want to hand it off to the next guy in better shape that I got it.” Jarrett said.
