The Cookeville Cavaliers boys tennis team finished their season in the state semifinals Tuesday afternoon.
Cookeville lost to Science Hill in Murfreesboro four matches to two. The loss was Cookeville’s first of the season at 20-1. Cookeville Tennis Coach Brian Rohr said he has seen growth throughout the season.
“I think every one of them has grown mentally,” Rohr said. “None of them have had a perfect season, but they’re there for each other and they support each other so if one guy has a bad day, the other guys pick them up, so as a team, they’re all perfect.”
Cookeville will graduate three seniors within the next few days. Rohr said he has not seen any issues with the team in a long time.
“We’ve had some talented players who kind of didn’t fit our culture and they kind of just cut themselves when they saw how the other players work,” Rohr said. “We have tremendous leaders and it’s very rare that I have to get involved in any form of discipline or anything like that.”
Rohr said he treats the tennis program as one unit.
“Our general approach is just going to be worry about ourselves and do what we do and not concern ourselves with the other side of the net so much,” Rohr said.
Cookeville appeared in the state team tournament for the second straight season. The Cavaliers are not done with tennis this year. The Cavaliers will see freshman Louis Kim continue play in the individual tournaments Thursday.
