Putnam On Short List Of Counties To Have Clean Audit

Putnam County one of 14 counties in the state to have no findings in its audit, according to the Tennessee Comptroller’s Office.

Putnam County Commissioners Audit Committee Chairman Sam Sandlin said it feels good to receive an audit with no findings. There are 95 counties in the state, and Sandlin said getting a clean audit from the comptroller’s office is not easy.

“Because of the size involved, you know what our county budgets probably $130 million, $150 million, something like that,” Sandlin said. “You know, it’s a big thing keeping the books for our county, and so getting everything just right for the report, it takes quite an effort.”

Sandlin said that eight out of the last ten years, the county’s general fund has had no findings. Sandlin said the county has great bookkeepers, and that having such success is what the county expects.

“It all starts with Mayor (Randy) Porter,” Sandlin said. “Mayor Porter has a real good feel for the accounting side of his job, and he expects it to be that way, and so it all starts at the top.”

This is the fourth time in the past eight years that the full audit came back with no findings. Sandlin said to the average person, a clean audit means that their elected officials are doing what is required for proper reporting.

Putnam County is the only county this year in the region to finish with no findings.
