The town of Monterey is submitting a letter to T-DOT in an effort to restrict truck traffic from State Route 84 down Commercial Avenue.
Monterey Cultural Administrator Rafferty Cleary said the move stems from guidance the town received as part of the transportation planning grant. Cleary said 18-wheelers take State Route 84 to avoid I-40. Cleary said the town has had growing concerns regarding noise, pedestrian safety, and damage to the towns infrastructure due to the amount of truck traffic.
“It’s a problem that’s been there a long time but with the amount of businesses that have opened up on West Commercial Avenue and the foot traffic that is increasing from our events and commerce, it’s time to maybe take a look and see if we can again alleviate, that’s the key work here alleviate some of that high volume of traffic,” Cleary said.
Cleary said the town is hoping the letter will start a series of meetings with T-DOT to see what can be done to address the issue. Cleary said he is not sure when the town will hear back from T-DOT
