Celina Legion Post 18 Weekend Display Honors Local Veterans

Celina’s American Legion Post 18 will display an estimated 621 crosses this weekend at the Clay County Courthouse to remember veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice.

American Legion Post 18 Member Jed Donaldson said each cross has two names of veterans who are buried in Clay County. Donaldson said displaying the crosses at the courthouse is so that everyone can see them.

“They are here for all of the public to enjoy,” Donaldson said. “You know, and some of these folks would be forgotten if they were not on display like that.”

Donaldson said veterans who died in combat will have a gold star at the top of their cross. Donaldson said he hopes people appreciate the veterans for their contribution to the country when they look at the crosses.

“Without them, our country wouldn’t exist as the way it is, you know, we wouldn’t have our freedoms to do as we please,” Donaldson said. “We couldn’t go to the church we want, we couldn’t go to the schools we want. America, if it wasn’t for our military, then we would be speaking German, who knows.”

Donaldson said the American Legion has been displaying crosses each Memorial Day weekend for the past 15 years. Donaldson said that over time, the number of names has significantly increased.

“The first year, we wound up with about 300 or 400 names, I can’t remember, but now that has grown to like I said, approximately 1,240 give or take a few,” Donaldson said.

Donaldson said the crosses will be on display throughout Memorial Day Weekend. Donaldson said the American Legion does need volunteers for picking up the crosses once Memorial Day passes.
