Cumberland’s Walker Looking to Rebuild Tennis Program

The Cumberland County Jets are currently without a boys tennis team.

Cumberland County did not field a boys team this year. Cumberland Tennis Head Coach David Walker said there is not enough interest in the team at the moment.

“It’s been tough,” Walker said. “We’re gonna try to drum up some support as we grow and hopefully we get courts in the next couple of years. I’m not sure what the status is, but we desperately need our own tennis courts.”

Walker also coaches the girls tennis team. The Lady Jets tennis team did not field a full roster this season. Walker said there is not a culture for tennis at Cumberland County High School.

“It’s because we don’t have courts that they hesitate to commit to a season,” Walker said.

Walker said he knows of at least six kids in the past few years that would have played had courts been more accessible.

“It’s a great auditorium, don’t get me wrong. It’s beautiful, and I’m glad we have it,” Walker said. “But unfortunately they had to sacrifice our tennis facility to build them.”

Cumberland County currently does not have tennis courts installed in the high school. The original tennis courts were used for parking lot space in the recently built auditorium. Walker said some of the boys would travel an hour or more in total on certain practice days.

Walker said he does not know when a vote will be for potential tennis courts to be rebuilt. There is a budget vote in place for next school year.
