New Sparta Disc Golf Course Open, Tournament Coming

The White County Recreational Complex’s new Spartan Summit Disc Golf Course is now open, and it will host one of several tournaments in the fall.

Disc golf is similar to regular golf, but players throw frisbees at a chainmail basket “holes” rather than hitting a ball with a club. Spartan Summit is an 18-hole course that was designed and built in part by volunteers from the Cookeville Disc Golf Club. Cookeville Disc Golf’s Danny Parkin said the Sparta course is challenging and the feedback has been great.

“I have lots of friends who’ve traveled from from Nashville, Knoxville, other areas of the state to check out this course, and they say its one of their favorite ones they’ve ever played,” Parkin said. “We take that very highly. A lot of time, effort, and work went into it, and so having positive ratings is always a good thing.”

Parkin said Spartan Summit is one of many disc golf courses throughout the Upper Cumberland. Parkin said most courses are free to play, and are open whenever parks are open.

“All it is is the cost of the disc,” Parkin said. “There are discs that are designed to go a little bit farther or faster designated for disc golf, but those aren’t necessarily required.”

Parkin said discs typically cost less than $20, and can be purchased at many sporting good stores.

Parkin said the Highland Rim Chainbreaker Tournament series begins this summer, and Spartan Summit is one of seven courses hosting tournaments.

“There are three different divisions,” Parkin said. “There’s professional players coming to play for cash, and there’s amateur divisions playing for prizes and merchandise.”

The tournament series will be played at courses in five counties in the UC. Parkin said the tournament in Sparta will be September 13.
