Livingston will begin replacing the roof at the city’s garage on Monday, after the city approved an estimated $45,000 bid.
Livingston’s Codes Enforcement Officer Walter Rutherford said the roof is old and is leaking in multiple places. Rutherford said he was a little disappointed as the city only received one bid.
“I don’t know if it was the fact that people are just busy with new construction and did not want to fool with a, you know, doing a re-roof,” Rutherford said. “And I understand too, that, you know, the state of Tennessee, if it is a bid over $25,000, you have to have a state license. And then, of course, that comes with a lot of liability insurance and other responsibilities from a legality standpoint.”
Rutherford said the project will consist of tearing off the three layers of roofing, repairing any deterioration to the roof decking, and adding gutters. Rutherford said installing a new roof shows the city’s commitment to maintaining their buildings.
“From an insurance aspect, insurance providers expect you to keep your buildings maintained,” Rutherford said. ” So, it’s showing that we’re doing our due diligence and being good stewards about taking care of our properties.”
Rutherford said replacing the roof will provide an improved work environment for the city’s employees.
“It’s going to give a safe and more healthy structure to work inside,” Rutherford said. “Which also helps boost morale, uh, you know, for the employees that we’re investing in making places better for them to work from day to day.”
Rutherford said all the city’s equipment is repaired inside the garage. Rutherford said the city garage will remain open during the renovation work. Rutherford said the job is expected to take only a few days to complete.
