Dekalb’s New Frontiers Camp Hosting Fell Run Fundraiser

Upper Cumberland runners can get a taste of Europe Saturday, raising money for the New Frontiers Adventure Camp in DeKalb County.

New Frontiers program director Shelby Rickard said fell running involves running or racing through upland country, up hills, or different terrains. Rickard said the name comes from the European term “fell,” which means hill. Rickard said fell running is similar to trail running.

“The difference between trail running and fell running is trail running is on, you know, there’s already been a trail that’s been created,” Rickard said. “And around here we have trails but we also have open fields, we have farmland, so we’re going to intertwine all of that.”

Rickard said fell running typically includes steep inclines and various settings. Rickard said fell running is a great way to get outside and active.

Rickard said training is different for fell running than other street racing.

“You might want to walk, or do interval runs for that matter,” Rickard said. “So when it gets kind of steep, know that it’s okay to walk up those trails. Or find a local trail. Running in places like that will help you prepare for something that’s not your typical 5k street race.”

Rickard said the New Frontiers fell run is a great chance to give fell running a try.

“This is more so to be a part of nature and enjoy the beauty of the run,” Rickard said.

Money raised from the run will help New Frontier will go to campers financial aid.
