Algood Approves $170K Street Paving Plan For New Year

Algood will move forward with a $170,000 street paving plan for the new fiscal year.

Algood City Administrator Keith Morrison said Algood will also pave a section of Mirandy Road, Quinland Lake Road, 4th Avenue, and mill and pave a section on West Wall Street. Morrison said Timberview Lane needs some of the most work.

“It’s from the bottom up into that curve, and it’s, if you drive up through there it’s real thin pavement and it’s cracked everywhere and there’s mud poking up through it,” Morrison said. “It’s a poorly paved street for a subdivision.”

The city originally planned $168,000 in this year’s budget to pave streets in the city that are in poor condition. Morrison said some more streets need to be paved, but will have to be pushed back to next year.

“We’ve been working on a paving plan since I started here, and we continue to chip away at it, so we do as much as we can every year and try to keep getting more and more and more so that eventually we get caught up and everything stays in good condition.”

The council rejected a street repair and crack fill contract. Morrison said this would be for street repairs that the city does not have the equipment to repair. Morrison said they only received one bid, which consisted of $21 per square foot for Asphalt, and $4.90 per square foot for crack filling.

“This is the first time we’ve done it this way,” Morrison said. “There were a few questions from some of the bidders, I guess, concerned about some of the categories, so we are gonna try that again and see if we get a better result.”

Algood also approved to enter a contract for a sidewalk and driveway crossing project. Morrison said the sidewalk section will be four inches thick and will cost the city $2.95 per square foot, while the driveway crossing will be six inches thick and will cost $2.95 per square foot. Morrison said the bids did not include the cost of concrete.

“These are just for them to come do installs, broom brush finish, curbing, whatever we ask them to do, and then I can come up with how much money I can spend and tell them I got this much how much of this project can I get done, and we can go work on it,” Morrison said.

Morrison said most of the focus for sidewalks will be in the downtown area. Morrison said the plan is to address downtown and then focus on installing new sidewalks along the rail trail.

The Algood City Council approved the paving plan, sidewalk contract, and rejected the repair/crack fill bid during Tuesday’s council meeting.
