Golden Years Challenging, Health At Top Of The List

The DeKalb County Library will be hosting a one day event in observance of National Older Americans Month.

DeKalb County Library Director Kathy Hendrixson said the goal is to honor older Americans and their contributions. Hendrixson said the most challenging things about getting older are physical health, memory loss and dependence on others.

“If you’re used to doing and going and doing for yourself, it’s hard to turn the reins over to someone else to do for you,” Hendrixson said. “You know, that kind of, you know, makes you feel — it’s depressing for people.”

Hendrixson said the best advice she could give to a senior is to get out, get active, know your limitations and just have fun with life.

“This is your golden years,” Hendrixson said. “It’s supposed to be your golden years and it should be a time that they enjoy. They can relax and just take time to do the things they want to do, you know, have fun, travel get involved in your community.”

Hendrixson said more than 20 vendors including law enforcement, home health agencies and internet providers will offer resources to the attendees.

“It’s a big event and it’s something that we enjoy doing and we just appreciate everybody that helps us out and give their time to do this,” Hendrixson said. ” It’s a worthwhile thing to do for older Americans. They just, they give so much to us and to their kids and their grandkids.”

The Older Americans Day Celebration in DeKalb County is Wednesday at the Mike Foster Multi-Purpose Center in Smithville.
