DeKalb Rekindling Interest In Preservation Society

The DeKalb County Historical Preservation Society is re-organizing after the organization sat dormant for several years.

DeKalb County Historian Freddy Curtis said his first goal after being named the county historian in December of 2024 was to reform the organization.

“We’re glad to reignite the love of history in DeKalb County,” Curtis said. “And so, it is really to preserve our history in many, many ways. And we’ve got several things we’re going to be doing in regard to that.”

Curtis said the group would like to start a county museum with help from the Tennessee State Museum.

“Looking and partnering with the state museum, getting some surplus display cases — and that’ll be our start,” Curtis said. “And the, we’re also partnering with the Center for Historic Preservation at MTSU and they’re assisting with panels and working with that. In fact, I’m doing an internship with them this summer and into the fall in creating those panels.”

Curtis said the group also plans to create a audio catalog of the history of DeKalb County. Curtis said they would like to interview residents and military veterans.

“Everybody’s got a story, everybody’s got a historical narrative in their life and getting that told and doing part of the oral history, things that we’re going to be doing is to continue that on, is to keep those stories alive.”

Curtis said the group had not met much since the passing of the former county historian, Tommy Webb.

Curtis said the group decided to meet the first Tuesday of each month at 6:00pm at the DeKalb Community Complex.
