York Boys Track and Field Head Coach Josh Hurst said he has a very special opportunity.
Hurst is in the middle of his 13th season as Dragons track and field head coach. He coaches a York team that has taken at least one boy to the state tournament in every year since 2015. Hurst said there is a lot more to look forward to every year.
“Making a state championship in any sport is special.” Hurst said. “But to do it in track and field is just an awesome opportunity for our student athletes and memories and relationships that they’re gonna develop in doing that for the rest of their life.”
Hurst has averaged 32 guys per team over his 13 year career as head coach. Hurst said he looks at coaching in general from a deeper perspective.
“If all I have is my wins and losses, that’s all I’ve got to hang my hat on, I’ve done a terrible job.” Hurst said. “I have a tremendous opportunity to have an impact, a positive impact on our student athletes and help them grow and push them, you know, help them learn about work ethic and dedication and sportsmanship and teamwork and work ethic and all of those things that are so important, not just in sports but really in life.”
Hurst said that philosophy remains his ultimate goal.
“My guys, you know, go get out of high school and take that drive about never giving up, hard work pays off, you know, don’t ever quit, always, in whatever you’re doing, do the best that you can do.”
Hurst said he expects to help his team get better every day. York will look for their 12th appearance in the state tournament and ninth in the last ten years. The Dragons recently saw eight personal best records set in a recent meeting.
York will host their third of five total meets this Thursday.
