The Warren County Pioneers softball team looks to improve one thing at a time.
The Pioneers sport one of the youngest softball teams in the Upper Cumberland. Warren County’s team consists of five seniors out of their 23 total players. Warren Softball Head Coach Jerry Martin said he looks to see the team catch the ball well every night.
“As long as we continue to improve our defense, I think that’s gonna make us better towards May.” Martin said. “We got a new third baseman, new shortstop, that are both sophomores and a freshman catcher, so we’re very young in the infield so we’re just trying to get some consistency and get those girls a little relaxed, more relaxed as we look forward to May.”
The Pioneers have started this season 2-6. Martin said he looks to see more out of his offense.
“We got to get some timely hits.” Martin said. “But, you know, we’re gonna keep grinding and try to get better.”
The Pioneers went 0-2 in the recent Warriors Classic. Their losing streak continued at five. Martin said the schedule has been really tough.
“We’re still a fairly young team, so it’s been tough for us.” Martin said. “Those games will make us better towards the end of the season. I like the way my girls are competing.”
Martin said the Pioneers put together a good showing against Gordonsville and Coffee County recently. Warren County has lost three of their six games by five runs or fewer. Martin said the focus is trying to win those games in May.
The Warren County Lady Pioneers will host Kentucky’s Warren East squad on Saturday.
